How Much Macrame Rope Do I Need?
How to Calculate the Number of Cords for Your Macrame Project?
Calculating how many cords you'll need for a project depends on several factors, such as the width of your project, the pattern you're using, and the density of your knots you want.
Here's a step-by-step explanation:
1. Determine the Width of Your Workpiece
Measure the width of the workpiece you want to make. For example:
- For a wall hanging : Measure the width of the stick or ring to which you will tie the macramé.
- For a curtain or fly screen : Measure the full width of the window or door opening.
2. Choose the Distance Between the Cords
The distance between the cords determines how dense or open the pattern will be. Use these guidelines:
- For dense patterns : Leave about 1-2 cm between the cords.
- For open patterns : Choose a distance of 3-5 cm.
3. Calculate the Number of Cords
Use the formula:
Number of cords = Width of project ÷ Distance between cords.
Example:
- You want to make a wall hanging that is 50 cm wide .
- You choose a distance of 2 cm between the cords .
Number of cords = 50 ÷ 2 = 25 cords.
4. Determine the Double Cords
Since you usually fold the cords in half when making macramé, you will need to double the amount from the previous step.
Example:
- For a wall hanging of 25 cords (single), you need 50 cord ends (double).
How do I calculate the correct length?
When making macrame, it is important to use the right length of rope or cord. Here are some guidelines to help you get started:
Basic rule :
- The general formula is 5 x the length of your project x 2 , because you will be folding the cords in half and tying them around a ring or stick. For example; you are making a 50cm long wall hanging: 5 x 50 x 2 = 500 cm
With many knots :
- Are you making a project with a lot of knots, like a 1 meter wall hanging? Then use 5 x the length . In this case, cut at least 10 meters of rope or cord.
With few knots :
- For projects with a lot of open space, such as a plant hanger, 2x the length is often sufficient.
Thicker materials :
- Please note that thicker materials such as 5mm rope or cord will require more length as knots are larger and more robust.
What do you do if the length is not correct?
Sometimes you make a mistake and just when you are in the middle of it you notice that you are not quite right. This can mean that you make fewer knots or have to add extra material. It is always better to cut a little more rope or cord than you think you need.
5. Allow Room for Adjustments
For thick cords it is more difficult to tie extra length if you run out, because the knot is larger and more noticeable. Therefore always take extra length, especially with thicker materials.
When calculating the number and length of cords, you should always consider the thickness of the cord in your planning. Thin cords require more cords and less length per knot, while thick cords require fewer cords but longer lengths per cord.
Tip: When making new patterns, try a test piece with the chosen cord and knots first. This will help you estimate how much material you really need.
